Fixing video tearing in Ubuntu

Video tearing is noticeable problem in Ubuntu with many Nvidia cards and sometimes even with integrated intel graphics. The fix is very simple and for some reason it’s not included by default. To fix this, hop into terminal.

  • Create a new file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf. Please note that you might have to create the directory xorg.conf.d if it doesn’t exist and you’d need sudo privileges.

sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

  • Open the file using  sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf and paste the following in the file:
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "TearFree" "true"

Logout and Login again. This should fix everything.
